Kids create art from nature: The environmental school will show kids how to make unconventional pieces of art

“Karena Harvey’s mother was teaching “found music” to students at the environmental school in Maple Ridge – making music with things you find in nature. As a volunteer art teacher with the school, Harvey – whose daughter attends the program – picked up on the idea and led the students in a “found art” session, making art from leaves, sticks, flowers – anything found outside in nature. The idea was so successful, it made even kids who didn’t think they were “so artistic” re-examine their esthetic abilities. “The environmental school didn’t win the Canada’s Coolest School Trip contest, but did take the $500 second prize, to be given to a charity of its choice. Six Grade 8 students, with the help of some parent volunteers, put together a lighthearted online commercial for the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, as part of the Parks Canada contest to promote the tourism opportunities on Cape Breton Island.” Read more >>

Experiencing Leadership

Our grade 8 students went on an overnight canoe trip on Widgeon Creek with Clayton and Randy. We began our trip at Pitt Lake and made our way up the east arm of Widgeon Creek until deadfalls made it impossible to go further with the canoes. We stashed the canoes, put our gear on our backs and hiked a further half hour up the creek to a nice gravel bar where we set up camp.

The theme for the trip was leadership and independence. The students did many activities that explored leadership from an aboriginal perspective called the Seven Sacred Teachings. These teachings relate leadership qualities to seven directions.
East – Humility
North – Courage
West – Respect
South – Honesty
Earth – Truth
Heavens – Wisdom
Inward – Love

Our meals were great even though our pancakes were rather thin. We weren’t sure which direction relates to reading directions, but that turned out to be one of the things we learned! The last day we packed up our camp and then explored some more. The creek was our trail as we waded and climbed our way along. It was a beautiful area and a lot of fun. We returned to the dock at Pitt Lake tired but filled with enthusiasm. There was something special about the time we spent working, learning, and exploring together.

Laptop computers donated to Environmental School

Hewlett-Packard, AMD and TLD have donated a total of 58 laptop computers to the Environmental School Project of the Maple-Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District. The laptops will go to the school this month, giving its students access to 21st century learning technology.

“Students in the Environmental School learn through experience and in context using a variety of tools, from knitting needles to hammers and saws,” says school principal Clayton Maitland. “These computers are a tool that will lead to exciting possibilities in student research, communication and presentation,” he adds.
